Instagram: @skinfullofseoul

When I decided to leave my comfortable home in the North of England, and make the dramatic move to South Korea to teach English, I knew it was going to be life changing. Quitting my job, picking up my whole life, and moving to a country I had no idea about, was definitely not going to be a boring experience.

The move to South Korea certainly did change my life in many ways; I was thrust into an alien culture, unable to read anything, surrounded by strangers and wondering how I was going to cope with teaching 5-11 year olds for 10 hours a day. However almost immediately, and this sounds both overly-sentimental and unrealistic, I fell completely in love with Korea. From kimchi to the kindergartners I teach, Korea has become a place that I know will never leave my heart. But right from the moment I stepped off the plane at Incheon airport in October 2014, one of the most interesting, and immediately apparent, attractions of South Korea to a girly girl like myself, was the cosmetics industry and the beauty culture.

The beauty culture in Korea is like no other place I have experienced. And for me, it is HEAVEN. On every street corner, there is an Etude House, a Missha or an Innisfree. Often, further down the street there is a second store. Go to Myeongdong and you are surrounded by hundreds of stand-alone cosmetics stores all offering the latest crazy ingredient or the best pore control BB Cushion. It is heavenly and also quite overwhelming at times. But I love it, and after months of shopping and testing everything I could get my hands on, my instagram page @skinfullofseoul was born, as I tried to find a way to channel my obsession and new-found knowledge.

In this first article I’d like to explain why I love Korean beauty so much, and how my life-changing experience of moving to South Korea, also became face-changing. There are four main reasons I love Korean beauty the way I do: the importance of skincare and a multistep approach; the real results of the products; the affordability of many of the products; and of course the packaging and marketing.

In The UK, in my opinion, makeup is much bigger than skincare. The glitz and glam of the latest Mac lipstick is much more appealing to the average British female, than an expensive serum. And I was the same. When I arrived in Korea I thought my skin was okay. I had the occasional breakout and an uneven skin tone, but generally I didn’t think past my makeup remover wipe and facial wash- maybe a toner occasionally. I rarely moisturised as I thought my skin didn’t really need it, and I wouldn’t have had a clue what to do with half of the products I now obsess over. And then my education of the Korean multi-step skincare began, and I’ve never looked back. I feel so bad for my skin that I never wore sunscreen or applied essence before! The multi-step skincare method intrigued me, and it was something I desperately wanted to try. I searched blogs for the ‘best’ product for each step, and gradually created my own regime through trying and testing many products. The idea of different steps to target different problems, and to incorporate different ingredients, is one of the many reasons I love Korean skincare- it hits every skin need.

As I’ve just mentioned, another one of the huge attractions is affordable skincare without a loss of quality. The market here is so competitive that products cannot simply be rubbish- they will not sell amongst the hundreds of other options available. The competitive market is obviously there at home, but not in the same way. It seems that every Korean woman has a deep understanding of skin and will only purchase what she believes is going to give her that glow. The change in my skin has been dramatic- my skin tone has evened out and my skin has never been so bright. When I facetime people they actually notice the change in my skin and face. SO many of the products produce real results!

With a competitive market comes a competitive price. It is possible to get excellent products for a truly affordable price. This makes skincare accessible to everyone, and was one of the major reasons I felt like I could experiment and try different products to see what worked for me. This is a huge attraction, especially for younger girls on a budget.

Last but not least, the packaging and marketing in Korea is INSANE. I had never seen such adorable panda-shaped jars of sleeping pack, beautiful frosted bottles of essence, snail cream packaged inside a little snail, or animal face sheet masks, before landing in Korea. The packaging along with the many samples that you receive makes the shopping experience so fun and enjoyable. It is a huge attraction and something that the West is nowhere near as experimental with.

And so you can see how my relationship with K Beauty developed. I now have a huge collection of skincare and beauty products, and I’m always testing new lines to see what else I can find to add to it. K Beauty has become a passion for me, and I hope to share some of that, and my knowledge, with readers in these articles.
